Counseling may also mean helping a person set goals and resolve conflicts. The past of a person is usually probed into in order for the counselor to help the person in repairing his or her current situation. The root causes of psychological problems are usually physical and chemical imbalances determined by the counselor. Resolving people’s conflicts and restoring people’s relationships is one of the major parts of counseling.

What are the roots of Christian Counselling? While they may appear to be the same because of their objectives, Christian counseling is different from secular counseling. Christian counseling is of another dimension. Christian counselors aims to determine which part of the person’s life in not in accordance to the will of God which standards are set by the Scriptures. The Christian counselor carefully encourages the Christian person to seek God to be able to walk in His will faithfully and with ease. The Christian counselor follows standard set of guideline on which they measure the progress of the Christian person which eventually leads the person back to God. The verse in Timothy which says that all Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work serves as the foundation or the verse that the Bible is the source of truth and is thus the source by which the Christian counselor performs his profession. There is no definite measure of success by which the secular counselor evaluates his or her counselee. Secular counseling instead uses the latest psychological findings or societal norm as the measure to evaluate the condition of a person’s progress. And such standards are dynamic meaning they keep on changing from time to time. The measure by which the psychological condition of a person is indefinite in secular counseling. Christian counseling believes that the Bible has several practical wisdom on the nature of man, family and marriage, the suffering of man, and so on and so forth. Christian counseling is more measurable than secular counseling.
